Employment

Did you know?

  • Only 49% of foster youth in one survey were employed and only 17% were completely self-supporting (Westat, 1991)
  • Another recent study found 12-18 months after leaving foster care, 50% were unemployed.
  • More than 300 youth will transition from the Washington State foster care system this year and more than 100 will go on welfare

Don't let this be you!
The Foster Care Independence Act of 1999 is helping local independent living service providers provide
skills training and employment resources so you can find and keep a job you want.

There are employment resources available to you here.
There are skills training programs available to help you learn computer skills, mechanical skills, office skills and leadership skills! Learn how to get your resume together and make a great impression with a future employer. Know your rights as an employee in the workplace and what to expect from your employer. The resources here will get you started!

The Chafee Act funding helps transitioning youth like you find a job and develop your career. Financial assistance is available for job training, job interview clothes, work uniforms and more! You will also receive case management and support services that are designed to assist you in achieving self-sufficiency.

Eligibility requirements are:

  1. You are at least 18 years-old and not yet 21.
  2. You have transitioned from a DCFS supervised placement (foster, group or kinship care) at age 18.
  3. You are not in foster care at the time of any payment.
  4. You have submitted an application and statement of need, approved by your Independent Living case manager.
  5. You participate directly in developing the service plan and accept personal responsibility for achieving independence.
