Interviews

You have passed the initial screening and it's time for the interview! Are you ready? Employers don't call in a lot of people for interviews, so congratulations! It's important to be yourself and to look at the interview as an opportunity for them to learn about you, but just as importantly it is an opportunity for you to learn about them.

Be prepared
Dress appropriately. Even if you would not be required to dress up for the job itself, it is important to bring across a clean and groomed appearance as a sign of respect to your future employer. Give yourself extra time to get there and arrive at least 10 minutes before the appointed interview time so you have a little time to relax. Avoid heavy perfumes and colognes in case one of your interviewers is sensitive or allergic to the chemical scent. Bring names and phone numbers for at least two references, an extra copy of your resume, paper and a pen.

Ask questions
Interviews are a chance for you to see how you feel about the employer. Ask questions at the end of your interview. Write down questions before the interview but feel free to write down thoughts and questions during your interview. It also lets the employer know this job is a thoughtful decision for you and not just a paycheck.

After the interview, send a thank-you note to your interviewer(s) thanking him/her for taking the time to meet with you.

1. What are some good questions to ask?

2. What are some quick relaxation tips?

3. What kinds of questions will I be asked?

4. What questions are illegal?

Practice!

If you haven't been to an interview before, practice talking to your friends, teachers or family at home. Practice talking about yourself! It may be more difficult than you think. Speak highly of yourself and why you are qualified for the job. It will help build confidence for the interview.

Be prepared for anything

The type of job you may be interviewing for could be very different from jobs you've applied for a few years ago. Employers may have more than one person interview you or give you a spontaneous test of your writing or math skills. Don't be afraid to ask what the format of the interview will be before the actual interview.
