Resume
A
resume is an important part of the job search process. Many employers
want to see a resume first, then they will determine if they even
want to meet you or talk to you about a position. Your resume represents
who you are and what your skills are so you want to ensure it makes
a good impression.
What
employers want
According to the
National Association of Colleges and Employers, the top ten qualities
employers seek are: communication skills, honesty, teamwork skills,
interpersonal skills (relates well with others), motivation, a strong
work ethic, analytical skills, flexibility, computer skills and
self-confidence. These are good skills to emphasize in your resume
as often employers now scan resumes electronically and will search
for key words.
Information
to include
Generally, resumes
include several common pieces of information. It is important to
include your name, mailing address, phone number and email address
if you have one. This gives the employer more than one way to reach
you. Also include:
- your
personal qualities and skills (for example, do you have
people skills, computer skills or good communication skills?)
- education
background
and dates of any graduations or your expected graduation date
- work
experience (for example, have you had any previous jobs?
If so, what were your responsibilities? Did you receive any awards
or recognitions like employee of the month? Have you volunteered
for anyplace before?)
- scholarships,
awards or any other recognition
- your
interests and any extracurricular activities

1.
How should it look?
2.
How can I make a good impression?
3.
What should I say in a cover letter?
4.
How should I change it if I am sending my resume by email?

Not
a lot of work experience?
That's okay. You can still make a good impression by including a
clear statement of your job objective and what skills you have that
will help you handle the job successfully. Employers want to see
you are a trustworthy and responsible person, not an expert.

I
want my resume to
stand out
Competition
for jobs in the Seattle area is strong. You can be creative in
how you put your resume together but just be sure it is readable,
scannable and it is still easy to see the information
important to the job description.
