Learning Disabilities
Having a learning
disability does not mean you are not as smart as other people. Nothing
is "wrong" with you. Your brain just works differently
than others. We don't know what causes learning disabilities but
you can usually tell by early childhood if you have one.
How
do you know if you have one?
According
to the Learning Disabilities Project, here are some signs of learning
disabilities:
- you are easily
distracted and impatient
- you can't
recognized mistakes and tasks take longer for you to complete
than others
- you can't
remember information easily
- you have
problems recalling instructions
- you omit
or use words inappropriately
- you have
trouble expressing thoughts concisely
- you have
trouble reading applications and forms
- you reverse
letters, words and phrases
- you have
poor handwriting or spelling
- you can't
do written math calculations
- you have
difficulty managing money
What
to do
If you think you have a learning disability, you should find out
for sure. You can ask your school to give you a comprehensive evaluation
and other assessment tests to determine what type of learning disability
you may have. It's important to learn more about your disabilities
so you can learn how to accommodate for them. Resources may be available
to you that can help you ease frustration and help you identify
and adapt to your particular disability.
