In Foster Care

1. Do I need permission to take the Ansell-Casey Life Skills Assessment?
No, permission is not needed to take it.

2. What if I want to leave care early and be emancipated?
Any minor who is 16 years or older and is a Washington State resident my petition in superior court for a declaration of emancipation. A petition for emancipation will need to include the following:

  • your full name, birthdate, and the state and county of birth
  • a certified copy of your birth certificate
  • the name and last known address of your parent(s), guardian(s) or custodian
  • your present address and length of residence at this location
  • a declaration by you stating you are able to manager your financial affairs
  • a declaration affirming your ability to manage personal, social, educational and nonfinancial affairs.

The court will grant the petition for emancipation if you prove with clear and convincing evidence that you are 16 years or older, a resident of Washington State and you have the ability to manage your affairs, both financial and nonfinancial. The court will deny the request for emancipation only if it seems it would be detrimental to your interests.
