Succeeding in life
skills
Do
you know?
- Nearly
one-quarter to one-third of transitioning foster youth in a 1998
study said they felt unprepared to live on their own.
Is
this you?
If you feel nervous
or unsure about becoming legally independent, you are not alone.
You should know there are a number of community resources here to
support you.
Financial
Help
Five hundred
dollars may be used for
your independent living support services. These funds are available
toward purchase of goods and services for
youth ages 16-18 who are in care and custody of the State of Washington.
This money could go toward: transportation to work and school, GED
fees or preparation courses, graduation expenses or community classes
on independent living related subjects,
purchase of household items, furniture
and kitchen supplies. They can also be used toward tuition costs
for post secondary education. Check
with your DCFS social worker to see how you may be eligible for
these funds.
The
YMCA Independent Living Program is the primary agency providing
life skills assistance in King County for youth ages 15-20 (21st
birthday). If you are looking for assistance, be sure you contact
them at 206.749.7540 to find out how they can help you!
Take
advantage of the resources here too.
Do you have your own bank account yet? Do
you know what your legal rights are and
how taxes affect you? These are all life
skills important to you in your successful transition to legal independence.
