YMCA Independent Living Program

Services: The YMCA Independent Living Program (ILP) assists
foster and former foster youth in their transition out of care.
Program staff provides individual mentoring and case management
services, including job readiness, career & educational planning,
daily living skills, leadership development, referrals to community
resources, and more. Former foster youth may be eligible for money
to assist them with housing, employment and education. Participants
must be at least 15 years of age and be referred by a state DCFS
social worker, or at least 18 years of age and a former foster youth
(self-referral is encouraged). Once referred, the program will work
with youth until their 21st birthday.

Services: Assists moderate to high functioning young
adults in King County to maintain stable housing and develop independent
living skills. The program assists with the costs of housing and
will support young adults in acquiring furniture, household supplies
and computer technology. Through life skills modules and coaching,
program staff support young adults in building independent living
skills in the areas of education, career exploration, job acquisition,
leadership development, relationships, health and wellness.
Eligibility:
Serves young adults 18 to 23 who have experienced foster care or
out-of-home care for 30 or more days, some portion of this care
between the ages of 15 and 17. The program currently cannot accept
young adults who are pregnant or parenting, have been convicted
of a felony, or whose mental health or behavioral challenges would
prevent them from being successful.

Services: Founded in 1974, YouthCare was the first shelter for homeless
youth in the Western United States and continues to be a leader
in providing services to this vulnerable population. Beginning as
a three-bed shelter for runaways, YouthCare has grown and expanded
to become a community-based agency with six sites serving the greater
Seattle area. Today, YouthCare’s services range from street
outreach and residential housing to employment training.
